Sometimes a plant turns out very different from what you expected.
Maybe it grew taller or shorter than the strain description, smelled completely different, produced unexpected colors, or even felt different after harvest.
It’s understandable to wonder: Did I get the wrong strain?
Can You Identify a Strain From the Finished Plant?
Unfortunately, we usually can’t identify an exact cannabis strain just by looking at the plant, buds, or photos.
Things like:
Plant height and structure
Bud shape
Color
Aroma 👃
Flavor
Flowering time
Potency or effects
can all vary from one plant to another.
Even seeds from the same strain can express different characteristics.
Why Can the Same Strain Seem So Different? 🌿
Cannabis seeds aren’t identical copies of one another.
Just like siblings can look and behave differently while sharing the same parents, plants can express different traits from the same genetic line. These differences are often referred to as phenotypes.
One plant may lean more toward one parent while another shows characteristics from the other side of its lineage.
That can mean noticeable differences in size, aroma, color, flowering speed, and overall experience.
The Growing Environment Matters Too ☀️
How a plant grows can also have a big impact on the traits you see at harvest.
Things like lighting, temperature, nutrients, container size, stress, and overall growing conditions can influence:
Plant structure
Flower development
Aroma and terpene expression
Color
Yield
Harvest timing
So a plant looking different from the photos on a strain page doesn’t automatically mean it’s a different strain.
Can You Identify It by Smell, Taste, or Effects?
Not reliably.
Many strains share similar terpene profiles and characteristics, so a citrus, diesel, fruity, earthy, or skunky aroma can appear in many different varieties.
The same is true for the experience after harvest. How someone responds can vary considerably, so effects alone aren’t a dependable way to identify an unknown strain.
Even if you absolutely love what you grew, we wouldn’t want to guess and tell you it’s a particular variety when there’s no reliable way to confirm that. 💚
What If I Truly Think My Seeds Were Mixed Up?
If something seems significantly different from what you ordered, our Customer Success Team can take a closer look.
It helps to provide:
Your order number
The strain you ordered
How many plants were affected
Photos of the plant during growth and flowering, if available 📸
Any original seed packaging you still have
Photos can help us review what happened, although they usually cannot confirm an exact strain by themselves.

The Bottom Line 🌱
A plant that looks, smells, tastes, or grows differently than expected doesn’t necessarily mean you received the wrong seed.
Natural variation between plants and differences in the growing environment can create some surprisingly different results from the same strain.
And if you end up loving an unexpected plant, enjoy it! Just keep in mind that without documented genetics or testing, there usually isn’t a reliable way to determine exactly what strain it is after the fact.
