The Differences Between Autoflower, Feminized, and Fast Version SeedsUpdated 3 months ago

Understanding the differences between these seed types helps you choose genetics that fit your space, schedule, and experience level. While the names can sound similar, each type grows differently and offers unique advantages.

Feminized Seeds

Photoperiod • Female plants • Full control over flowering

Feminized seeds are bred to produce nearly 100% female plants, meaning you avoid the work of identifying and removing males. They are photoperiod strains, so they require a change in light cycle—typically 12 hours of darkness—to trigger flowering.

These seeds are ideal for growers who want:

  • Full control over plant size and training

  • The ability to decide exactly when flowering begins

  • Reliable, bud-producing female plants

Feminized seeds work well both indoors and outdoors.

Autoflower Seeds

Automatic flowering • Time-dependent growth • Feminized by default

Autoflowering seeds contain ruderalis genetics that allow them to flower automatically, usually 3–5 weeks after sprouting, regardless of the light schedule.

Key traits include:

  • No need to switch to 12/12 lighting

  • Naturally compact plants

  • Fast growth and quick harvests

  • Feminized options that produce female plants without guesswork

Autoflowers are ideal for beginners, tight spaces, or growers who want a faster, low-maintenance grow cycle.

Fast Version Seeds

Photoperiod • Faster flowering time • Not autoflower

Fast version seeds (fast-flowering seeds) are photoperiod strains bred to finish their bloom stage 1–2 weeks sooner than standard versions. They still depend on a light-cycle change to begin flowering.

They offer:

  • Quicker harvests

  • The structure and yields of photoperiod plants

  • A shorter flowering window without becoming autoflowers

Fast-flowering seeds are especially useful for outdoor growers with short seasons or indoor growers aiming to speed up their turnover.
