How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds Using Our Recommended Paper Towel MethodUpdated 3 months ago
The paper towel method is one of the most reliable ways to start cannabis seeds. When done correctly, it creates a warm, moist, oxygen-rich environment that encourages fast and healthy taproot development. Below, you'll find ILGM’s recommended approach, along with practical tips to help you avoid the most common germination mistakes.
What you will need
Cannabis seeds
Thick, unbleached paper towel
Small plastic tub with a lid (or two plates)
Spray bottle filled with clean, room-temperature water
Label or sticker and pen
A dark cupboard or warm, shaded space
Step-by-step: Paper towel germination
Step 1 – Label your container
If you're working with more than one strain, label your tub with the strain name and the date. Keeping things organized at this stage avoids mix-ups later.
Step 2 – Prepare the first damp paper towel
Spray a sheet of unbleached paper towel until it is evenly damp—not dripping. Fold it in half and place it flat inside the tub.
Step 3 – Position the seeds
Carefully place your cannabis seeds on the damp towel, allowing space between each seed. Good spacing prevents taproots from tangling and makes transplanting easier.
Step 4 – Cover with a second damp towel
Dampen a second sheet of paper towel the same way, fold it, and place it directly over the seeds. This “blanket” maintains consistent moisture around each seed.
Step 5 – Close the tub
Place the lid securely on the tub. This helps keep the towels from drying out and creates a stable humidity level ideal for germination.
Step 6 – Store in a dark, warm place
Put the container in a dark cupboard or similarly warm, sheltered space.
Aim for a temperature of 70–85°F (20–30°C). Consistent warmth is key to a quick, even germination.
Step 7 – Check daily
Look in on your seeds once every 24 hours to confirm the towels are still damp. Add a light mist of water if needed. Avoid inspecting them too frequently, as unnecessary handling can disrupt early root development.
Step 8 – Transplant as soon as taproots appear
Most seeds will show a white taproot within 48–72 hours, though some may take a bit longer.
Once the taproot is around ¼–½ inch long, gently lift the seed—using tweezers or clean fingers—by the shell, not the root. Place it into your growing medium with the taproot pointing downward and cover lightly with soil.
Troubleshooting and common issues
Paper towel too wet
Over-saturated towels can limit oxygen and cause seeds to struggle. Towels should be damp, not dripping.
Paper towel too dry
If the lid is loose or the environment is dry, towels can lose moisture quickly. Dry towels will halt germination until re-wetted.
Temperature too low
Cool conditions slow or stop germination. Keep your setup in a consistently warm spot.
Ideal range: 70–85°F (20–30°C).
Taproots damaged during handling
Taproots are extremely delicate. Always hold the seed by the shell when transplanting, and avoid touching the root directly.
A note on stubborn seeds
If a seed hasn’t opened after 72 hours, check your moisture and temperature first. Some seeds simply take longer than others, and a slightly extended waiting period is normal.
If no progress occurs after several days, contact customer support for guidance.
Final tips for success
Maintain a clean workspace and use clean hands or sterilized tweezers
Use high-quality, chemical-free water
Keep the environment warm, dark, and stable
- Resist the temptation to disturb the seeds too often
