My Plant Is Male or HermaphroditeUpdated 3 months ago

Discovering that a cannabis plant is male—or showing both male and female traits—can be frustrating, especially when you’re growing from feminized seeds. While this is uncommon, it can happen, and understanding why makes it easier to respond and prevent it in future grows.

Why a Plant Can Become Male or Hermaphrodite

Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants the vast majority of the time, but cannabis is still a living organism that reacts to its environment. In most cases, male or hermaphroditic traits appear due to stress, not genetics alone.

Common stress triggers include:

  • Light issues, such as light leaks during dark periods or overly intense lighting

  • Temperature extremes or fluctuations, especially prolonged heat

  • Nutrient problems, including overfeeding or deficiencies

  • Irregular watering practices

  • Physical damage, pests, or disease

Under stress, a genetically female plant may develop male pollen sacs as a survival response, which is known as hermaphroditism.

Understanding the Difference

  • Male plants develop clusters of round pollen sacs and do not produce white pistils.

  • Hermaphrodites show both pollen sacs and female flowers (pistils), sometimes on the same branch or bud site.

Both can release pollen, which may seed nearby plants and significantly reduce bud quality.

What to Do If You Spot It

If pollen sacs appear early in flowering, the safest option is to remove the plant immediately to protect the rest of your grow. Once pollination occurs, energy shifts from resin production to seed development, lowering potency and yield.

Reducing the Risk Going Forward

To minimize the chances of this happening again:

  • Keep lighting schedules consistent and eliminate light leaks

  • Maintain stable temperatures (around 68–78°F / 20–26°C)

  • Feed balanced nutrients and avoid overfeeding

  • Reduce environmental stress wherever possible
