Understanding Cannabis Seed Yield EstimatesUpdated 16 days ago
When you see a yield amount listed for a cannabis strain, that number is not the total yield for the entire pack of seeds.
Yield figures are estimates of what an individual plant, or a specific growing area, may be capable of producing under favorable growing conditions.
For example, if a strain is sold as a 20-seed pack, the listed yield does not mean all 20 seeds combined will produce that amount.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Yield
Yield may be listed differently depending on how the strain is grown:
Outdoor yields are commonly shown as an estimated number of grams per plant.
Indoor yields may be shown as grams per square meter (g/m²) rather than per individual plant.
Because of this, always check how the yield is labeled on the specific strain page.
Is the Listed Yield Guaranteed?
No. Yield numbers should be viewed as potential estimates rather than guaranteed harvest amounts.
The actual amount harvested can vary considerably depending on factors such as:
Lighting and available sunlight
Length of the vegetative period
Container and root space
Temperature and humidity
Watering and nutrition
Plant health
Growing technique
Indoor or outdoor environment
Weather conditions
Pest, mold, or disease pressure
Two plants grown from seeds of the same strain can also finish with different sizes and yields.
What If I Have Multiple Seeds?
Each viable seed has the potential to grow into its own plant. Therefore, a pack containing 5, 10, or 20 seeds gives you the potential for multiple plants—it does not mean the yield shown on the product page is divided among those seeds or represents the combined harvest from the whole package.
For example, if an outdoor strain lists an estimated yield of 500 grams per plant, that figure refers to the potential yield of one mature plant under favorable conditions, not 500 grams from the entire seed pack.
Ultimately, the yield information on a strain page is best used as a general comparison between varieties rather than an exact prediction of how much your particular grow will produce.
